Blackout Key Points
A “Black Out” will be applied over the Encapsulating Clear to black out and cover up any LumiLor as desired.
The “Black Out” does not have to actually be black. It can be any opaque color.
The “Black Out” can also be the primer-gray color of raw LumiLor when in the “off” position. This can be applied over the busbar to match the raw color of LumiLor. This color can be applied for the process when the LumiLor will be hidden or “ghosted” in the final result.
To avoid any under spray and or seepage with the “Black Out” make sure each “Black Out” coat is a light tack coat or else it may seep under the vinyl tape.
When top coating LumiLor to achieve a certain color in the off stage the “Black Out” to cover the busbar will be the natural “raw” color of LumiLor so the entire panel is one solid color. The top coat process will then be easier to achieve a solid color match without having a dark and light base when “ghosting” or hiding an image into a normal paint job.
Steps
- Scuff the Encapsulating Clear with a red Scotch Brite pad
- Indicate where the illuminated area is on the substrate and measure at least 1/16" to the inside of the LumiLor and with vinyl tape, tape directly on the illuminated area. Tape the entire area and mask the rest of the illuminated area with application tape or paper masking.
- With the entire illuminated area masked, spray a light tack coat with “Black Out” material. It should appear to be very spotty with hardly any coverage.
- Each coat of the “Black Out” will be sprayed as a light tack coat until the entire desired effect is achieved.
