What Skills or Experience are Needed?
LumiLor is applied using a HVLP (high volume, low pressure) spray gun. Basic painting skills such substrate preparation, masking, etc. are required. Painters with experience applying coatings with a HVLP system have the basic skills needed to apply LumiLor.
LumiLor sprays similarly to other paints. Always remember that when applying LumiLor you are constructing an electrical system that must have specific properties to work correctly. Meticulously following the instructions is required instead of relying on visual queues.
What Equipment is Needed?
REQUIRED
- Well ventilated area with ambient temperature of at least 70°F
- Automotive grade HVLP gravity fed spray guns with 1.3mm nozzle
- Paint Preparation System (PPS) with attachments - allows the spray gun to be stored upside down while not in use and will help avoid clogging the nozzle with heavy particles
- Hard shell cup, disposable sleeves, screw top lid
- Fitting attachment
- Watch the video at the bottom of this page highlighting the importance of using a PPS
- Compressor, airlines, and fittings
- Respirator
- Multimeter
- Must have the ability to read ohms and mega-ohms
- Amp reading may be useful but is not required
- Black light
- Any size/shape of blacklight can be used - handheld flashlights (you will need someone to hold it for you), miners light/headlamp, wands/tubes, cannons, etc.
- Larger black lights illuminate more workable area
- Portable black lights allow for flexibility in pointing the light where needed
- Camera/video recorder and notebook to document your progress.\n
- Detailed visual documentation is essential for troubleshooting application issues.
- Speed clear - A fast drying automotive grade “speed clear” MUST be used to encapsulate LumiLor. Traditional clear coats are heavier and more aggressive when drying and my impact the performance of the Conductive Top Coat.
- Automotive grade clear coat
- Infrared heat gun 50°F - 650°F
- Stir sticks - glass or plastic (never metal or wood)
- Red Scotch Brite pads 320-400 grit
- 97% isopropyl alcohol
- Fine line tape 1/2"
- Masking tape 3/4" and 1/4"
- Masking paper 3"
- Drill or Dremel with 3/32" bit (not required for 2oz Starter Kit)
- Strainers: 120-140 micron
- Mixing cups: 8oz or 32oz
- Tack rags
- Timer
- Touch up brush pack - various sizes
- Nitrile gloves

- Paint stand and cart
- Popsicle sticks (for J-B KwikWeld)
